About Wookey Hole

Wookey Hole is a village lying some two miles to the west of Wells, at the foot of the Mendip Hills. It is a pleasant resort village made famous by the glittering limestone cavern known as "Wookey Hole" which comprises of several dramatic chambers, one which has a spring, the primary source of the River Axe which for centuries supplied the power for Wookey's paper mill.

Sandwiched between the Somerset levels and the Mendips, Wookey Hole village offers lovely places to explore. It has a glorious mix of scenery, with the hills having woodland and reservoirs where you can find habitats for wildlife, whilst the levels encompass the floodplains of the rivers Axe, Brue, Parret and Tone and their tributories. The levels, lying beneath Wookey Hole village, cover some 35,000 hectares and are some of the most important grassed and wetland areas in Britain.

In high summer Wookey Hole village is thronged with visitors all seeking entrance to the show caves. It is somewhat quieter in spring and autumn, a lovely time when you can enjoy the soft colours of the year's early months and the vibrant hues of the fall. It has a smattering of typical Somerset cottages, and is close to the tiny cathedral city of Wells.

Visitors will find inns, cafe's, places to stay and a few shops for souvenirs.
